Patients with long lasting and profound neutropenia are sometimes given a compound, a so-called granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), that stimulates the production of white blood cells (granulocytes) in the bone marrow. G-CSF is a growth factor that also occurs naturally in the human body. Studies have shown that G-CSF, when given to patients with fever and neutropenia, may decrease the the duration of neutropenia and related time spent in the hospital.
